Orlando - Musiktheater for sopran, baritone, video and lights | 2022/24

Premiered in Landestheater Linz season 2023

Orlando is a Music-Theatre piece for two voices, video, and ensemble. The project was born as part of the Landestheater Linz program to promote new trends in musical theater. Its premiere took place in the 2023/24 season as part of Landestheater Linz's Musiktheaterlabor program.

The libretto is inspired by Virginia Woolf's eponymous novel and the European literary tradition, where the figure of the knight, starting from Ariosto's version, has been one of its cornerstones. From La Chanson de Roldan, Boiardo, Ariosto, Haendel, Vivaldi, Cervantes, Haydn, to Virginia Woolf, who subverts the myth and manages to generate the new universal image of Orlando.

In this version, Orlando is an entity divided into two bodies. We witness from the beginning this mutation, this birth of Orlando. Once aware of their new reality, they are assaulted by memories of their beloved, Angelica, who tries to contact them through a social network.

Once they try to find her, they will come face to face with the harsh reality: the Artificial Intelligence that controls access to the platform no longer recognizes them as Orlando. Their bodies are scanned, examined, judged, but there seems to be no solution for a dissenting body like Orlando.

Orlando is all of us. In a society where the rise of artificial intelligence, bio-scanners, personal information on the web, and stigma and biased discrimination organize and rationalize our post-digital reality.
