The Surrender - for ensemble, video, lights and performer  | 2022

Premiered by Delirium Ensemble in Leicht über Linz Festival

5 June 1635. The Dutch governor Justin de Nassau hands over the keys of the city of Breda to Ambrosius Spinola, the Genoese general in command of the Flanders Tercios. The city, being of vital strategic importance, was one of the most hotly contested places in the long struggle between the Spanish monar- chy and the United Provinces of the North. Its capture after a long siege was considered one of the most important military events of the time.

This work focuses precisely on the memory of a historical event such as The Surrender of Breda, immortalised by Diego Velázquez. This painting rests in the Prado Museum and is seen by thousands of visitors every day. How we face the world of images and how they generate a collective memory in us will be one of the main questions we should ask ourselves at the end of the visit.
